Detailed Review
First Impressions
When the Safari Thorium Royale arrived, I was genuinely impressed by the Vanilla Tan colour. It looks classy and different from the usual blacks and blues you see on airport conveyor belts. The polycarbonate shell felt sturdy when I pressed down on it, and the textured finish seems like it will hide scratches well. Build quality at first glance? Pretty good for the price bracket.
How I Tested This
I took this bag on three domestic flights over the past month – Bangalore to Delhi, then Mumbai, and back home. Packed it to the brim with clothes, a laptop sleeve in the front pocket area, toiletries in the wet pouch, and even stuffed my running shoes in there. At Bangalore airport, I deliberately rolled it across those rough granite floors near the taxi stands. The real test was squeezing it into IndiGo’s cabin overhead bins – it fits, but just barely. Make sure you don’t overpack or you will be checking it in.
Performance
The 8-wheel spinner system is genuinely smooth. I could push this thing with one finger through Hyderabad airport, no jokes. However, I noticed one wheel started making a faint clicking sound after the third trip – nothing major, but worth mentioning. The TSA lock works fine, though I found the combination mechanism slightly stiff initially. Took a few tries to get the hang of it.
The organized interior is a real plus. The wet pouch kept my damp towel separate from clothes after a gym session before my flight. The compression straps held everything tight even when I had packed awkwardly. One complaint – the interior lining feels a bit cheap compared to American Tourister bags I have used.
Build and Durability
After three flights, there are two minor scuffs on the corners. The polycarbonate is flexible enough to absorb some impact, but I would not trust it with rough baggage handlers on international flights. The telescopic handle has two height settings and feels reasonably solid, no wobble yet.
Value for Money
Here is where I am conflicted. At full price of around ₹5,000, it feels expensive. American Tourister and Skybags offer similar specs for less. But during Amazon and Flipkart sales, I have seen this drop to ₹3,500 range – at that price, it is a decent deal. Flipkart reviews mention zipper issues for some buyers, so there might be quality control inconsistency.
