Detailed Review
First Impressions
When the ABOUT SPACE bookshelf arrived at my flat, I was honestly surprised by how compact the packaging was. Everything came flat-packed in a single box weighing around 8-9 kgs. The wood finish looked acceptable in the product photos, and in person, it’s decent enough for the price point – not premium by any stretch, but passable for a rented apartment or a kid’s study room.
How I Tested This
I assembled this shelf in my home office where I needed storage for my mix of paperbacks, hardcovers, and some decorative items. The assembly took me about 45 minutes with a basic screwdriver – the included Allen key works but is painfully slow. I loaded it with roughly 25-30 books across the five tiers, plus a small indoor plant and a photo frame. I also tested its stability during our monsoon months when humidity can warp cheaper wood products.
Build Quality & Assembly
Here’s where I need to be brutally honest. The “wooden” material is actually engineered wood or MDF with a laminate finish. It’s not solid wood, so don’t expect heirloom quality. The assembly instructions are confusing with tiny diagrams, and I had to watch a YouTube video to figure out one step. Two of the cam locks were slightly misaligned, requiring some force. That said, once assembled, it stands reasonably sturdy against the wall.
Performance & Daily Use
After three months of use, the shelf holds up fine for light to medium loads. I wouldn’t recommend stacking heavy engineering textbooks on the top tiers – there’s noticeable flex. The bottom two shelves handle weight better. One thing I appreciate is the open-back design which makes it feel less bulky in smaller Indian rooms. However, dust accumulates quickly, so weekly cleaning is necessary.
Value for Money
For under ₹2,500, you’re getting exactly what you pay for. Flipkart and Amazon reviews echo similar sentiments – it’s functional but not exceptional. If you’re furnishing a PG accommodation or need temporary storage, this works. For a permanent home library setup, I’d suggest saving up for something sturdier from Nilkamal or Urban Ladder.
