Detailed Review
First Impressions
When the delivery guys lugged this massive box into my 2BHK, I was genuinely excited. The Nilkamal Sierra came well-packed with thermocol on all sides, and honestly, I was relieved nothing was damaged. Unboxing was easy since it comes mostly assembled. You just need to attach the back portion, which took me about 15 minutes with the included Allen key. The brown velvet fabric looks way more expensive than what I paid for it. My wife immediately claimed it for her evening reading sessions.
How I Tested This
I have been using this recliner daily for about 6 weeks now. My setup is in the living room corner near the balcony, and during May heat in Delhi NCR, I wanted to see how the velvet fabric holds up. I am around 78 kg and 5’9″, and my father who visits on weekends is about 85 kg. We both tested the reclining mechanism extensively. I also deliberately spilled some chai on it to test cleaning, and my 4-year-old has jumped on it more times than I would like to admit.
Comfort and Build Quality
Here is where things get interesting. The cushioning is firm, not plush. If you are expecting that sink-in feeling like expensive La-Z-Boy recliners, you will be disappointed. But after a week, my back actually felt better because of the firmer support. The reclining mechanism is smooth enough, though you need to apply decent force on the side lever. My father found it slightly stiff initially. The footrest extends well, but the angle is not fully flat, more like 150 degrees. For watching TV after dinner, it is perfectly fine. For afternoon naps, I would prefer something that reclines further.
The velvet fabric feels nice to touch but here is my honest complaint. During peak summer without AC, it gets warm. Not unbearable, but noticeable. We ended up throwing a cotton bedsheet over it in June. Dust also sticks to velvet more than leatherette, so weekly vacuuming becomes necessary.
Durability Concerns
After 6 weeks of daily use, I see slight compression in the seat cushion where I usually sit. Not alarming, but worth mentioning. The wooden frame feels solid, no creaking sounds yet. The chai stain came off with mild soap and water, though a faint mark remains if you look closely. Overall build seems decent for the price range.
Value for Money
Look, this is not a premium recliner and Nilkamal is not pretending it is. For under 18k, you get a functional recliner that looks good in photos and works fine for everyday use. The 1-year warranty is standard, nothing special. If you are furnishing your first home or need a recliner for occasional use, this makes sense. If you want something for daily 4-5 hour use or have back problems, consider spending more on brands like HomeTown or Urban Ladder.
